I thought it would be nice to have a place to talk about that - to share that with those who may be interested. so here it is - the angler's quarter. fishing stories, fly patterns, photos, and links to other sites are among what you'll find here - have fun!

tyin' flies

Wow, I actually sat down in front of the TV and tied 5 flies tonight. May not sound like alot, but for me that's production tying. I'm sort of a perfectionist when it comes to my flies so I get a bit worn out when I tie. I'm always pretty satisfied with them though - that's a good thing - and they catch fish, which is even a better thing.

I tied 3 #6 Clouser's Minnows (white and brown with perlescent krystal flash), 1 Crawdad colored #4 Wooly Bugger, and a #4 souped up Mallard Minnow with a little sparse krystal flash underbody and Jungle Cock cheeks - and lead - I am almost afraid to use it. I will though, and I'll let you know how that works.

I've put the subscription service on the left there. Add your e-mail address and get the posts as I post them here, then come look at the pictures if you don't get them in the e-mail. Good fishing!

Wow! It's been like 8 months since I blogged here. Sorry for anyone who ever looks at it. I know there are very few. I have been fishing a few times this year - mostly to Silver Creek in Madison County Kentucky - currently my favorite stream. I've caught a decent number of Smallmouth Bass. Of course, never enough. Too busy.

Here are a few photos of one of the more memorable trips. My son Conor and I hit Silver Creek. We caught a few - Smallmouth and at the end a pretty chunky Largemouth.

I'm currently reading Dances with Trout by John Gierach in lieu of fishing. Gierach is great at bringing the stream to you when you can't get there. I love reading the adventures of these guys who can actually fish 250 days a year - what the hell is up with that? I don't know if I'll ever get there - we shall see.

I don't think I've actually fished for Trout this year. If I have, I can't remember. I will definitely have to change that situation. I'll keep you posted. I think I'll put a subscriber service on here so you don't have to come check a non-updated blog so often. Hopefully I can start talking more fish talk.

I'm pretty sure I'm going here on the weekend of December 13th for a camping/fly fishing trip with my good friend Kevin. Kevin is not presently a fly fisherman. He will be though. This will be his break-in trip. I doubt many people will be on stream on a weekend in mid-December, so hopefully some of those hold-over Rainbows and maybe Browns too, will be hungry for flies. We shall see.

I've never really fished in the snow before. I am praying that snow will fall as we camp and fish. You know, not like a blizzard but a couple of inches. I want to stand in that beautiful landscape, snow falling around me, and pull a few Trout out of the cold waters. Report to follow...

I actually went fishing last week - Monday, a week ago - very warm, but cloudy day on Silver Creek. I fished for around 3 hours and caught 11 Smallmouth. Good day. All underwater - a couple on a Mallard Minnow, a couple on a Shenk's White Minnow, and the rest on my own Wooly Thang (pictured below somewhere). Rock ledges, structured tail-outs - that's where I caught them. That's what you would expect I reckon. I really didn't even try top water - grasshoppers or anything - It may have worked, especially in the late evening. I was there in the middle of the day though. I'll post photos later - I took a few of the stream environment. Oh, and the 21st century fisherman actually got a good cell phone signal standing in the middle of the creek and called my friends Steve and Kevin to spread the joy (they were working by the way). Kevin wants to learn to fly fish - we'll have to set that up. That's all for now. Hopefully it won't be so long next time.

No fishing lately - rain, rain, rain in Kentucky. It seems to have calmed down though this week. It's up in the 80's now - I may try this week sometime - we shall see.

OK, that's what the creek is supposed to look like. That was me, standing in it, taking that picture, Sunday morning. That's my favorite stream by the way, Silver Creek. I got up at 6am like a real fisherman and headed out. It was still a bit chilly when I got there - see your breath chilly. It took me about an hour or so to start catching fish, but it happened. It was slow. The water was still fairly cold in general - I was surprised by that. I was starting to think the fish were on the nest - may have been but I don't think so with that water temp. I waded wet - didn't take long to get used to it. Of course later I ended up crotch deep wading across one section - that's pretty typical.

I usually start there at the falls and work down a ways. I did that after nothing happened at the falls. On my way back up I cast a wooly bugger into a side pool area where some spring water drips in from rocks above and caught two Smallmouth and 3 Sunfish. Then headed back up to the falls - nothing there again - and on upstream.

I got a workout today. Wading against current is like working out on a weight machine. Feel the burn! At one point in the adventure, as I was taking a picture, I lost my rod! Orvis 7'9" 5wt Far & Fine outfit. I've had it for around 12 years I guess. It fell into some fast current and off she went - AAAaaghhh!! I had to take off running downstream to reach down in the water and retrieve it. Of course then I stick my long-sleeve clad arm up to the elbow in water to grab the damn thing - I got it though - thank God. I ended up a little later at what I call the Peacock hole (guess what you hear in this spot sometimes). This is a long hole of water with a current tongue running all the way through it into a rock strewn tailout. One side it typically deep and the other is a rock shelf - big time Smallmouth country. I caught 3 there - one of them you see up there. I caught the earlier two on a black and olive Wooly Bugger - these 3 on a Mallard Minnow. None of them were very large, but big enough to put up a good fight. Gorgeous day, caught 5 Smallmouth and a few nice Sunfish, I needed that.

The boy and I went fishing yesterday - another attempt. It IS Spring - it's required that at least we try. Went down to Silver Creek (no I don't live in Idaho - not THAT one) to try for some Smallmouth Bass. I'm sure the Bass are still in there somewhere. None of them decided to make an appearance for us though. We had fun trying though. The water was just a little too high from the previous day's rain - you see that over there. In a few days it'll be perfect - you know, that fishy green color. There's the Con man after a day of being skunked. He's alright. We'll try try again next time. Like I said, it's Spring. It's supposed to rain.
